AutoAid Breakdown FAQs

Commonly asked questions and answers about AutoAid’s car breakdown services

1. How does AutoAid Breakdown pay and claim scheme work?

We will arrange help at the scene of the breakdown and will arrange and reimburse any call-out fees and labour charges needed to start your car.

If you experience a breakdown, just call our AutoAid helpline and we will arrange for the emergency roadside assistance. You pay for costs and expenses yourself, safe in the knowledge we will reimburse** any amounts covered by this insurance in approximately 14 days.

To make a claim, you must send the original invoice(s) together with any receipts and a completed claim form to us. The address is:
AutoAid Breakdown Claims Department
Motor Breakdown Division
Library House
New Road, Brentwood
Essex CM14 4GD
Telephone: 01277 235 820

If AutoAid’s pay and claim scheme is not for you, then we recommend you to visit our sister site Autonational Rescue for breakdown cover.

2. Does my breakdown insurance with
AutoAid cover my spouse/partner?

AutoAid Breakdown covers you and your legal spouse with total breakdown cover, which includes, roadside assistance, a vehicle recovery service to one place of your choice, home breakdowns, emergency travel or overnight hotel accommodation and an attached caravan or small trailer.

However, if you are not legally married or in a civil partnership (same sex marriage), we are unable to cover a common-law partner under the same policy. If your partner would like to become an AutoAid Breakdown member, a separate breakdown policy would be needed.

3. How can I pay at the time of the breakdown?

When you call AutoAid’s helpline to arrange assistance at the scene of the breakdown, we will ask you which form of payment you have with you at the time, so the garage we send out to rescue you will be able to accept whichever credit/debit card that you have with you. We recommend AutoAid members to always carry a form of payment with them.

4. Does AutoAid Breakdown cover me
if I have a breakdown in Europe?

AutoAid only covers you driving in the UK (mainland England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). If you were travelling to Europe we offer a separate cover called EuroRescue which covers you for the time that you are abroad.

5. If I experience a breakdown more than one mile from home, will AutoAid Breakdown recover me and my passengers?

AutoAid will reimburse the full cost of recovering you, the vehicle and up to five passengers to any UK destination of your choice.

6. I don't have a spare tyre on my car,
can AutoAid Breakdown still cover me?

Although the AutoAid Breakdown policy states you are required to have a legal spare tyre, we are aware that some cars do not have this and have a tyre inflation kit instead. In this instance, AutoAid Breakdown will recover your car to the nearest tyre centre for you to get a replacement.

7. Does AutoAid cover home breakdowns?

Yes. If your breakdown occurs at your home, AutoAid Breakdown will arrange help and reimburse any call-out fees and labour charges needed to get you on your way. If your car can’t be repaired quickly, we will reimburse the cost of taking the car to the nearest available garage. Please note the maximum reimbursement under this benefit is ONLY £65 (which would normally cover the callout fee from the garage, any basic labour charges and local recovery costs).
